== Recent Orain Updates ==

Greetings all,

A lot has happened quite recently (I mean '''a lot'''), for those not actively involved in our IRC channel (#orain on freenode), here is a brief update of what has happened recently.

* Upgrades
** Orain updated to the latest stable release of MediaWiki, 1.23.
** All extensions which have updates for 1.23 have also been updated.
** We've moved over to MediaWiki 1.23's json style for i18n.
* Downtimes
** We have experienced a few downtimes over the past month. These include service failures (10 minutes in total), upgrade issues (5 minutes total) and issues with our host (15 hours).
** We have looked into all downtimes and put into place methods we can use to prevent these reoccurring again.
* New Stuff
** After a few downtimes, we introduced Nagios to our infrastructure. Nagios can be viewed by any user on [http://prod1.orain.org/nagios3/ prod1].
** We also introduced an IRC RC bot. All RC feeds on public Orain wikis are now sent to #Orain-feed on JDNet (irc.jasperswebsite.com). Users can join the channel manually as well as introducing bots to the channel.
** We now have a twitter account! [https://twitter.com/OrainWiki Follow us]

We know the past two months have been rough with a few matters which have been occurring internally with our staff but we are working to resolve all issues which we are aware of as soon as possible. I thank you for your patience and I hope we can continue to work together to build an awesome wiki farm! Also, Orain will be 1 year old on July 12th 2014.

Thanks, on behalf of all Orain staff, [[:m:User:John|John]] ([[:m:User talk:John|talk]]) 21:21, 12 June 2014 (BST)

I have logged onto All The Tropes

I have just logged onto the wiki as you requested. Thanks for setting it up. GethN7 (talk) 23:43, 23 October 2013 (UTC)GethN7

Hi there! That was quick, might I say. You're certainly welcome. As for your rights, they are  Done. If you need anything else, feel free to ask! -- Joe G. (Talk) 23:45, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Logged to sante.orain.org to stand it up !

Hi, I have just logged onto the wiki sante.orain.org as you requested. Thanks for setting it up.

Do I ask other privates user for my wiki to open a count into www.orain.org site ? Or do I manage into my wiki user I want to invite ? Please let me know if it's possible to modify user name or login into my wiki admin page. Do I need to add a mediawiki extension do do that ?

Thank you very much !

Hi Orainuser! It's my pleasure to be able to setup a wiki for you! As for getting users on your wiki, it is up to you to recruit them. They will be able to register on your wiki at sante.orain.org/wiki/Special:CreateAccount and use that account to edit from. There is no need for them to come here to register. As for your username, it is possible to have it changed, but it is something that I must do for you because of our global system. It will change across all Orain wikis (including here and santewiki). If that's something you're interested in me doing for you, please reply to this message with your new desired username and I will change it for you. Note, after I chance your username you will have to visit Special:MergeAccount to setup your global account again to login to santewiki. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Have a good day, -- Joe G. (Talk) 23:05, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Inactivity removal

Hi Joe G!

I was a bit confused when I saw this as I hadn't the feeling that activity is required for this access. I rather understood this role as something which assists stewards to deal with all kind of requests where import access is needed and I still always take a look at orain at least twice a week. Anyway, I will accept this step if you think it is bad to have users with global access who don't edit actively. eikes (talk) 18:45, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Eikes! It wasn't intended to be of any form of insult or anything of that nature, rather just a step of caution. The global importer group has some rights assigned to it that are of administrator caliber and, as with any higher-level right, can cause damage to Orain/Wikis if your account was to become compromised. I had no idea that you still check Orain weekly, and if I had, I wouldn't have considered you inactive or anything. I'll gladly restore your rights to you. I hope there are no hard feelings, we appreciate the help! -- Joe G. (Talk) 19:28, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
Oh, thank you! Of course there weren't any hard feelings, even if your decision had differed. That's not my style, and I hardly assume bad faith :) eikes (talk) 20:05, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Why?

[1] Why you did that? The community is waiting for this, and you did not solved, and now you removed? We cannot work without most of the features, because we suggest changes, we make videos... so why, I did not saw any excuses for that.. Guerreiro Wikinambá (talk) 00:33, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Good afternoon. It is general practice to archive items that have not received any additional responses in over 20 days. Your request was quite old, and your wiki is inactive. Since the request was old and the wiki inactive, we try not to spend time handling obsolete issues. Since there was no response, we generally assume that a) You have found a workaround, or b) that you have forgotten about your wiki altogether. If your wiki was active, or you had inquired recently about the status, it is likely that your request would have remained on the page. I apologize for the misunderstanding and invite you to post a new request with the features that you still wish to be installed on your wiki. Have a nice day, -- Joe G. (Talk) 20:30, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
We are inactive because of the missing features... my question is, how many times I will need reinsert the features to be totally implemented? This is not, smart... but ok, I will do that.Guerreiro Wikinambá (talk) 12:16, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Good afternoon. You should re-request the features and they should be handled shortly. If they are not, you should periodically post a reminder or inquiry about their status. That will ensure that they get taken care of. -- Joe G. (Talk) 20:34, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Bye....

Hi Joe. Are you really going to resign? This is quite sad. :( One steward is gone now... Take care Joe and hope you return. Jianhui67 talk 15:59, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Your resignation and rights

As per your request, your rights have been removed both globally and locally. As you resigned of your own free will, and not under a cloud - you are free to have the rights back at any time. Dusti*Let's talk!* 16:37, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, I appreciate you taking care of this for me. In the future, I may return. If you guys need help with "pet projects" or anything of that nature, I would be glad to be of assistance when I am available. You've got my email :) -- Joe G. (Talk) 16:57, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Requested wikis

Is there any possibility of the requested wikis being created? Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 18:44, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm not trying to be short. It just seems odd that it's been a long time and there hasn't been any response to either user. Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 22:28, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Requests

Thank you for making me an admin. Could you also please give me import rights? Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 17:52, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Malicious JavaScript protection

I was wondering if this site had it in the event that a sysop gets hacked or a bureaucrat gets social engineered into promoting a hacker or skript kiddie. It seems that it does because I was trying to display a banner from Google Docs hosting in a frame using JavaScript, and the frame didn't display. I could try making the banner entirely on-wiki with the script and images uploaded to MediaWiki Testers (under full protection). The importScript() function works between wikis, right? My plan is to make a banner that promotes wikis at Orain. All wikis that display the banner would get to be included. It would be a way of helping promote membership among wikis. Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 21:25, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

If I seemed at all forceful

If so, I'm sorry if I seemed like a jerk in any way. I might seem a bit short or frustrated when I get determined or focused. Do we have WikiLove enabled here? Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 00:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey, you didn't seem forceful or short or anything like that, it's just that when it comes to issues that can affect the organization as a whole, a definitive answer has to be given. My answer was not intended to put you off in any way, but rather just make it known that the organization does have certain procedures that have to be followed in order to handle some situations, that's all. Appreciate the cookie :-)! -- Joe G. (Talk) 00:38, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Ok, good. I just wanted to make sure. You were fine. I want to make sure that we have a good system going because I want Orain to succeed. The only two issues that I see are funding and getting people to create and edit wikis. With multiple admins,funding shouldn't be an issue. What I worry about is that if there's too long a process for wiki creation that people who are just trying out hosts will request one here, go to Wikia, try it instantly, and then get stuck there. We do a pretty good job blasting Wikia on the main page though. Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 01:15, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

A cookie for you!

Sorry if I seemed short. Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 00:27, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Confused

I thought you have resigned from Steward, with User:Joe G/Resignation, however you look like to have steward userright.... — ReviComplaint? 02:15, 17 May 2014 (EDT)
