Forum:Would like to submit a proposed Orain logo footer button

From Orain Meta
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Here's a proposed button to go along the bottom of all wikis using the Orain wiki farm.

It is based on the Powered By MediaWiki icon and the Orain logo. As it is partially based on a graphic copyrighted to Orain, I hereby release all rights to this file to the Orain staff to do with as they see fit.

Since there is no easy way to determine what wikis are on the Orain service unless someone checks Special:SpecialPages on Orain centered wikis, I propose this icon or something similar be added to the wiki footer with a link back to Orain Meta for easier identification of all wikis connected to the Orain service. Sorry, but that I don't think that logo is ready to be put on a wiki farm. It needs to be retouched. --Jeff (talk) (contribs) 14:05, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Agreed. We're very grateful for the effort, but it will have to be retouched a bit. Kudu (talk) 14:30, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
I figured as much. I'm not a very skilled artist, but I would be willing to work on this further unless someone else would be willing to work on this. Either way, thanks for the responses. Arcane (talk) 17:25, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Arcane
Sorry Arcane, but it's still pixelated. I would recommend you try again and get yourself used to gradients on Paint.NET. I agree with Kudu, your efforts are much appreciated nonetheless. --Jeff (talk) (contribs) 19:04, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
This is a very good idea, and I would also have an Orain little banner in the footer of our wiki. We get so much from Orain.org and this is a simple way to contribute to the project. About the design, why not following the same structure as File:Powered by MediaWiki.svg, just changing the logo and the text: "Hosted by Orain.org". Easy for me to say though, I'm no svg/graphics wizard.--QuimGil (talk) 17:44, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
While you're at it, maybe a favicon for Meta-Orain would be nice too? And it could be used as a default favicon for all new wikis in the farm, until the individual wiki owner provides a replacement. Just a thought. AugurNZ 22:23, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Agreed. If you'd like, I can use Photoshop to make them. --Jeff (talk) (contribs) 22:43, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
To be honest I think some users like myself would oppose a footer logo button because some of us like how our wikis look almost autonomous like we are our own encyclopedia without any branding except the subdomain.--Tyreek (talk) 01:34, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Personally, I think that a small, unobtrusive footer button, like the existing Creative Commons and "Powered by MediaWiki" buttons, is a small price to pay for a free wiki hosted without adverts. I'd be happy with it. If the choice were ever to be this button or Wikia-style adverts, I'd definitely prefer this. AugurNZ 19:40, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Agreed, but maybe it could be removed if a price was paid; I would absolutely comply with a request to remove the footer for any paying customer. --Jeff (talk) (contribs) 19:58, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
I'm not going to charge someone to remove a button. We're not a "if you pay for it we'll do it" farm. If a wiki simply doesn't want or like the button, I have no problem in removing it. Dusti*Let's talk!* 20:18, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
I totally agree Dusti :D --Tyreek (talk) 12:23, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I did some fiddling around with the footer, and after a lot of reverts, I managed to get a reasonable one though it is in the archives. However, I have implemented this idea on our testwiki for now using a variable. I'll leave this in the works for now instead of enabling it globally, but when it is, it will adhere what Dusti said. If a community does not want it, they can ask and we will disable it easy. If a community wishes to opt-in to it now before we enable it globally, tell me and I will do so.
