This page hosts proposals for new Orain wikis. Here you can: Propose new wikis. If you have an idea for a new wiki, submit it here. Get involved in the process. Help sites get off the ground by defining the types of articles that are wanted and by recruiting editors to help with its launch. StreetsWiki needs a new home. Could Orain be a home for this wiki?

StreetsWiki was created in 2007 by Streetsblog and members of The Open Planning Project to support their initiative for promoting livable cities. It was originally hosted by openplans.org as part of their Livable Streets Initiative, but in 2010 or thereabouts, they decided to spin it off as a separate entity, due to reduced funding/staffing, and the contents were migrated to the current StreetsWiki home at Wikispaces.

Since that time, it has been fairly dormant, with only a handful of changes and updates, but it still serves as a very useful reference of livable cities / streets concepts, and is still linked to from many places on the web. There are currently three organizers, the original two who performed the migration from the openplans.org site to Wikispaces, and myself.

Very recently, Wikispaces (which has refocused itself primarily on educational uses) has decided to eliminate free wiki hosting for non-education wikis. While StreetsWiki is an educational resource, it would be a bit of a stretch to categorize it as an education wiki, as it is not primarily about education, but rather livable cities. In the next 30 days, StreetsWiki needs to either find a new home or a funder who is willing to pay the maintenance fees that Wikispaces will charge, or it will disappear from the Internet entirely.

I think that Orain could be an appropriate home for StreetsWiki. I welcome your feedback as to whether StreetsWiki would be a reasonable addition to Orain, and especially any input about the technical issues involved in migrating content in bulk from Wikispaces markup to MediaWiki markup (the latter would be useful even if StreetsWiki ends up with another wiki hosting service).
