The main Wikimedia/Wikipedia of course allows infinite size images to work. This sounds like a limit in the software that generates the thumbnail rather than mediawiki itself. A lot of times Wikimedia software uses a command line program called ImageMagick to generate the thumbnails. I tested it and 3600x3400 is around the maximum size it will work. I checked some other large images uploaded here and they were about 3500px and thumbnailed so that is about the maximum.
