Forum:Orain Logo
Intro
It would be great if we could make fair use of the Orain logo. I see that the logo currently in use here is the one Kudu uploaded with the comment "This is a rough draft to be discussed and should NOT be used for any external or official purposes."
History
I have briefly discussed with Dusti, in IRC, the possibility of remixing the Orain logo for use on the BotWiki. This issue was also raised in my original wiki request and assent was given at that stage. I have emailed a draft of the remixed version to Dusti, giving full rights over my remix to Orain. If that remixed version could be uploaded to Commons by an Orain Steward, that would be helpful. Changing BotWiki's $wgLogo setting in LocalSettings.php could then be requested.
Problem statement
The Orain wiki farm has a general policy of not allowing users to upload images, preferring them to be uploaded to Commons. While this is a great idea, it leaves us users with the meddlesome burden of negotiating licensing issues with Commons. Technically, I cannot upload the Orain logo to Commons, because it is copyrighted to the creator of the image. In the file history it shows that the original version was uploaded by Dusti with the comment "Orain logo designed by User:Dusti. Copyright © Orain. Not CC-BY-SA." Such a restrictive license doesn't allow for remixing, which prevents me from uploading my remixed version to Commons, even though assent was given here.
Also, I'd like to include the Orain logo as part of my common Editnotice page, similar to my Editnotice on WMF projects (see example). To do this, I'd either need to be able to upload the Orain logo to all wikis in the Orain wiki farm (not likely to happen, right?) or access it from Commons.
Proposed solution
What I'd like to see is a copy of the "official" Orain logo be uploaded to Commons by an Orain Steward. I would recommend the most restrictive license available from the Creative Commons stable, which would be the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0) license. That's just my suggestion, and I am no expert on these things. AugurNZ ✐⌕ 22:30, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- I cannot agree with CC BY NC ND. If this logo becomes CC BY NC ND, You CANNOT upload to commons. 레비ReviDiscussWMF wikis 10:09, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- You're right Yena, I hadn't noticed that before. According to Commons' licensing requirements, an image uploaded there must allow for publication of derivative works, and commercial use of the work must be allowed, amongst other things. Hmm, I'll leave that to the Orain Stewards for further consideration. AugurNZ ✐⌕ 13:58, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- I have an idea: The logo is usable, but only under conditions specified by the authors. Specifically, it can only be used under conditions specified by the creators of Orain. For instance, the logo is on WikiIndex, but it's use there is permitted because it was posted by one of the owners of Orain for informative purposes regarding the Orain wikifarm service. I propose the Orain logo only be permitted to be used on Orain wikis normally under conditions set by the owners, with use on non-Orain websites allowed on a case by case basis, again determined by the owners. - There are two separate, but interrelated issues at play here. The first is licensing and rights related, which could be addressed by your suggestion, Arcane. The second is providing links to the image itself. From what I'm seeing, thanks to Yena's clarification about being unable to upload the logo to Commons in a license-restricted format, the only avenue I see to resolve this issue is for the "official" Orain logo to be uploaded automatically to each new wiki in the Orain wiki farm as the wiki is created. This could be a job for a global bot, methinks. :] AugurNZ ✐⌕ 15:37, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Well, actually, there is another avenue that could be considered: $wgAllowExternalImages. It's a long shot, and I doubt it would be allowed, but it would solve the problem of being unable to reach the logo from inside a [[File:]] tag. AugurNZ ✐⌕ 15:51, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Why dont all wikis just have a local upload function like Encyclopedia National(My wiki)?--Tyreek (talk) 22:49, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- I don't agree with it. If then, it may cause waste of storage. 레비ReviDiscussWMF wikis 03:24, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
You should now be able to use images from Meta Wiki on local wikis. This new feature should only be used for images copyrighted by Orain which can't be uploaded on Commons. Kudu (talk) 17:31, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
