== Orain Site Update #1 ==.

This can be called the official first monthly site update hence the #1 so; let's get on to what has happened during the month of July!

Technical

During July, Orain added two new servers to the cluster, there were two incidents and one long term fix.

  • prod5 was added as an additional webserver which we plan to use to help distribute the load of web requests and as a fail-over so if prod4 fails, we can continue to provide you all with your wikis.
  • prod6 was added and is still in the setting up stage. It is planned to take over the role of prod1, a server we are planning to decommission eventually.
  • We had a small security issue regarding ElasticSearch on our prod3 server. No unauthorized access to the data stored on the server was seen and the server has since been made more secure. As a security precaution, ElasticSearch was removed from the cluster and wikis were defaulted back to MediaWiki search.
  • From July 30th to August 1st; there were issues with out going MediaWiki mail. This has since been resolved however incoming mail to all @orain.org addresses are still not functioning as of August 3rd.
  • A long-term issue with images was resolved on July 15th.
New Features
  • A wikicreator group was added to metawiki so community users can handle new wiki requests which is one step into delegating new roles and responsibilities to the community. Wikicreators are chosen by system administrators using their discretion.
  • Cyberpower678's tool was given access to some database tables on public wikis. As a result the UserAnalysis tool works on all public Orain wikis.
  • UrlShortener was enabled on all Orain wikis to allow shorter URLs to be used. Currently URLs follow the form of 'https://$database.orain.org/o/$id'. If wikis want to use a shorten URL of their choice; please make a request to the system administrators.
  • Private wikis may now (on request) use image authorization for their wikis. This means images are made web-inaccessible as to preserve the security of images uploads while still being accessed by users with 'read' access to your wiki.
  • Orain now allows the use of OAuth. Please see the OAuth page on MediaWiki for more details. OAuth requests can be made on any wiki and will be approved by a system administrator on metawiki.

Orain Site Update #2

This is an update of all technical changes and issues during the month of August.

Technical Changes
  • prod1 was removed from active maintenance on August 6th and removed from the cluster a week later.
  • Orain migrated from RamNode to DigitalOcean. The work began on August 17th
  • We moved away from Memcached to Redis for session and general caching on all Orain servers.
  • We added prod7 to the cluster during the migration. It is responsible for Redis and static content hosting.
Technical Issues
  • The job queue did not run any job for 4 days as a result of permissions errors with Redis. We have rolled back to using the database for this for now.
  • All wikis experienced database issues shortly after the migration as a result of MariaDB cache taking up excessive disk space. To fix this in the long term, prod5 was recycled as a new database server.
  • For an hour on the 25th of August, users occasionally got caching errors and log in issues as a result of Redis taking up excessive disk space.

Request features preload

Would you be able to include a section in the preload template that includes a request for a link to the extension from MediaWiki? It'll make it easier for the sysadmins. Dusti*Let's talk!* 19:16, 20 September 2014 (BST)

Right now it looks like:

That doesn't seem too user friendly. What about something like:
| WikiID = Replace this with the name of your wiki
| subdomain = Replace this with the subdomain of your wiki
| Extension name = Replace this with name of the extension you want
| Link = Replace this with a link to the extension you want (i.e. the MediaWiki URL description)
| description = What does this extension do and why do you want it?

How to import files

Hi. File uploading is enabled on your wiki, so that should work. If it are many images, we can install an extension like http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiUpload, http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:UploadWizard or http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MsUpload if you want. Alternatively, you can try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Scripts/ImageFileMigrator or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:File_upload_service/Script. I can't guarantee the last two script will work, but you are free to choose any of the extensions or other methods here. Let me know what seems the best for you. Hi Southparkfan, no, that's actually no what I mean. I've seen that Orain also links to Commons, to uploading pictures etc. is not something that has to be done frequently. Ah, you mean files with the content of articles? Yeah, sorry, I thought you meant images with files. Assuming you want to import content from an other MediaWiki installation, you first should get a dump with the XML format (can be made with Special:Export on that wiki. Also, XLS? That sounds Microsoft Excel format, which is not compatible with MediaWiki and would require conversion.). If the dump XML file isn't too big (< 3 MB/60 revisions), you can request access for "Special:Import" on isvwiki. If the XML file is bigger than that, it will require a sysadmin to import the dump. In that case, you should upload the file somewhere (e.g. http://www.filedropper.com/ or https://wetransfer.com), and give us the link, and then we'll import it soon. In that case I'd like to request access to Special:Import indeed. I have several .xml (I mistakenly wrote .xsl) files and only one of them is big (ca. 10 MB), so I could already get started with the rest. Orain's FIRST donation drive!!

As many of you may have seen, Orain has been undergoing some significant changes. To be frank, we've outgrown our current home. With 288 communities, 1,000+ users, and sites like All The Tropes growing daily - we're beginning to look at the long term future of the project. With current funding levels, we can last four more months after we upgrade to some new servers. Our last server change wasn't that long ago, yes, but it was done to improve the overall stability and functionality of the site.

We've launched an Indegogo campaign to raise $5,000 to accomplish a couple of things:

  • We would be able to move to a stable, secure, short to mid term server that has the capability to not only host us now but continue hosting us even if we grow significantly
  • Begin the process of investigating solutions that include us purchasing our own private servers

Can I ask you for $1?

We're 9 days into our 30 day campaign, and we've raised $537. That's fantastic! The idea of Orain, our message, our purpose - it means something. The belief that there can be a community led, a community ran, and a community funded website that's not ad-driven or profit based works.

Our community has believed in us from the beginning, and I firmly believe that our community will stand by us and continue to support us. It's okay if we don't reach our $5,000 goal. $5,000 was a best case scenario. $1,000 enables us to stay online another year. It enables us to keep looking at alternatives and other ways to stay online and cut costs. $500 halves that time and shortens our research ability. 11% of our goal is better than 0% of our goal.

I've made a pledge from the beginning. I've vowed to never force ads on this community for the purpose of keeping Orain alive. Ads are what separate us from the other farms we compete with. Site news for January!

Hi there! It's been a wild ride over the last few days!!

We went from being dead in a couple of months to being certain of the next couple years to come! We're sitting at $2,100 in our Indiegogo fundraiser, just shy of 50% of our goal. Those of you who have contributed to the cause, I cannot tell you how blessed I feel. To know that the project I helped Kudu create a couple years ago is providing a service that is helping and impacting others makes me feel great.

Hello Southparkfan!

Thank you for confirming my wiki request (hegelpedia).

Being a programmer, I started that thing on my "private" hompage.
It's free from ads, has enough space for MediaWiki and so on.

Webhosting there (xyzxyzxyz.com) is very fast but I faced a lot of
problems with SSL resp. https. I think that people don't like it to
see their IP on a wiki page or to send their password unencrypted.

So I like to thank all the staff of Orain.org for their good work.
The concept of Orain.org is fantastic for starting a lifelong,
(more or less serious) wiki project.

I hope my contributions will make Orain.org even more better.

RE global sysop

You noted recently that you think I am possibly misusing my GS rights, for spamming the wiki only. This isn't true, in fact I requested GS rights to fight spam and make the problem better, not worse. Custom domain permanentfuturelab.wiki

Hi Southparkfan, I looked at the Orain wiki pages to find documentation about how to use your own domain name, but couldn't find the information about this. Can you explain me how to configure this? Het werkt redelijk, ik kan wel pagina's aanmaken en bewerken, maar ongeveer de helft van de links verwijst naar http://permanentfuturelab.wiki ipv http://www.permanentfuturelab.wiki (met www. dus). Als ik handmatig in de browser de URL aanpas dan werkt het wel weer, maar ook voor de eindgebruikers die willen inloggen op de wiki, komen tegen dit probleem aan. Hopelijk is dit nog te fixen.

Ik vind het maar raar dat het niet goed werkt, maar ik heb wel een alternatief voorstel: Orain host ook dns-servers voor wiki's, en als mensen dat willen kan de DNS van hun domeinnaam gehost worden op ns1.orain.org en ns2.orain.org - zou dat in jouw geval ook mogelijk zijn? Dan is dat www-probleem er niet, en kan ik de 'hacks' die ik in principe geactiveerd had voor jouw wiki ook gewoon weghalen. Hoor graag wat je ervan denkt. Shell access to the End of Time Wiki to verify some things.

Good day, this is Dr. Swordopolis from the End of Time wiki. I submitted a couple of extensions to the request page about a month and a half ago for the TimedMediaHandler and WikiForum Extensions. Arcane and Wynter tried to verify their successful installations but without shell access they could only do so much. You can read more about the attempted installation on Arcane's Talk Page and on Wynter's Talk Page. Would you be able to finalize installation of those two extensions? Also, if Wynter is unable to do so, would it be possible for you to disable Dismissable Site Notices for this wiki? Questions

I had a couple of questions. Is it possible for me to replace the "Orain" logo with my own logo?

Wikipedia offers the ability to compile wiki articles into a book which can be downloaded in different formats. Is this something that can be added to my wiki? I wasn't sure if this was something that was available as a plugin or module.

Problems with permissions on eduguide.orain.org

I am having some issues on my EduGuide wiki that I hoped you could help me with. I had asked for it to be private, so I think that maybe the permissions for my account need to be reset. I am able to view the wiki site, but I am not able to access the special pages or create a new page.

Also, when I had asked for the wiki to be private, I was hoping that the pages could be made viewable only to members. Is that something that you would need to adjust on the backend, or is that something I can change once I have administrative rights?

SSL error in custom domain permanentfuturelab.wiki

Hi Southparkfan,

I visited the permanentfuturelab.wiki today and got an error in my Chrome browser I haven't before. It is an SSL certificate error "NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID". As I remember our domain didn't used SSL before, so I guess there is a change in the configuration where it is using SSL now, but can't handle it because the SSL certificate isn't for our domain. AbuseFilter & Pages not loading.

Per our chat on IRC, here's a note. Confirmed using multiple computers, accounts, and IP addresses: Whenever certain abuse filters are tripped, instead of loading the page, it fails to load just displaying a blank white page (entirely white, no loaded content. Not like [[Special:BlankPage or just showing the orain logo. literally nothing).
The abuse filter is still successfully tripped, and a corresponding entry is made at Special:AbuseLog, but even if the filter is set to allow the action, the action still isn't performed. Also, the page not loading prevents any warnings from being shown (ie: MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning.

All my pages were flagged as spam

After spending a whole afternoon experimenting and trying to understand how I might structure a wiki, some agent has gone through and flagged every page I built as spam and deleted the content. What gives??

Sorry for flagging them all as spam but I don't think the pages need to be on meta. Orain has a test wiki, and you are free to create you own wiki (even if you stop using it). Apologies, but after 2 accounts were just banned for making nothing but spam on their user page, I thought this might be the case (all pages were prefixed with the same name). I had a question (I'm CK from earlier but editing as an IP). On TropicalWikis, where the wiki used to be, my username was Cp kid. Here, I made it CK since I'm tired of Cp kid. Is there any chance you could move all of my old contributions and such over to the new name? I'm editing as an ip because I wasn't sure if editing from the new account would mess anything up.

In addition, I had some requests (if possible), mainly for new namespaces on the wiki. Chill hasn't given approval yet though, so I'll let you know when he does. Most of the "namespaces" already have pages under them (either they were namespaces on TW, or we just used the tag because we didn't know custom namespaces were a thing), will that be a problem? On the CPWN it was a problem setting up a Forum: namespace, but the tech staff found some way around that so the old pages weren't messed up.

  • Not So EPF Wiki: Redirect to project
  • Not So Elite Penguin Force Wiki: Redirect to project (I think technically the project namespace includes the parenthesis around (Not So))
  • Read: Where all of our stories are located. We didn't think to make this a custom namespace back in the day.

Extensions / feature requests

github:601 is still handling various things, and i've enabled replace text on gamewiki per Request features but how do I enable extensions that aren't listed in 'misc extensions' area?

I saw the local extensions file and the global extension one, but how do I tell if an extension is in the /extensions/ directory to even be required?
