Wikilevels

I have moved ownership of Wikilevels from the current wiki manager to User:TCN7JM. Per discussion with the user they are interested in the site and since the current manager did not do anything with the wiki, TCN7JM will make a good person to manage the wiki. If people want a brief background on the user and why I did this without seeing them contribute here first, it is because I work with the user on Wikidata (A Wikimedia Foundation project) where TCN7JM is the holder of sysop rights therefore shows competency.

Any objections are free to be discussed below but I will continue with this and I would prefer it not be reverted without discussing with me. I also discussed it with the creator of the wiki's logo who has no concerns with TCN7JM managing the wiki in its current state. John (talk) 23:32, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Tanner

I have removed Tanner's global Sysop due to him leaving TestWiki totally. This should not be controversial since he has not continued to edit nor contact has been made expressing interest in keeping it. As for David, regular (practically daily) contact shows he is still interested but is un available to do much but has the interest and will keep the right for when he returns.

As a note, Tanner gained the rights through a single stewards decision while David gained them from a stewards decision before Addshore joined us. John (talk) 21:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Arcane

I've granted Arcane a local sysop flag. I've done this based on his assistance thus far with Orain and his knowledge of MediaWiki. I see no issues in his behavior and believe he'll be an asset. Dusti*Let's talk!* 03:40, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Interaction ban request - AugurNZ and Zhuyifei1999

I would like to request an enforced interaction ban between myself (AugurNZ) and the user known as Zhuyifei1999. There may not be established policy for such a ban here at Orain at present, but I would respectfully ask that such a policy be enacted forthwith in response to this request.

For an example of the form such a policy might take, please see the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages (UESP) Interaction Ban policy page, and their archived discussion about the issue.

Evidence: Please see the Community Portal discussion and the following IRC chat log from tonight (23-Aug-2013 NZT)...

[19:15] <zhuyifei1999> AugurNZ: answerd
[19:16] <zhuyifei1999> AugurNZ: ping
[19:16] <AugurNZ> just reading it now
[19:17] <zhuyifei1999> AugurNZ: If you want to know whether I'm actually on IRC or not, just ctcp me
[19:18] <AugurNZ> I'm not getting into it with you any further, zhuyifei1999. I'm not really all that bothered whether or not you like my contributions.
[19:18] <zhuyifei1999> I don't
[19:18] <AugurNZ> fine
[19:19] zhuyifei1999!*@* added to ignore list.

...both of which indicate that an interaction ban would be appropriate in these circumstances. This is not something that I take lightly, and I am aware of the gravity of making such a request. AugurNZ 07:50, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

' Note:' Zhuyifei1999 has been blocked for one week due to the harassment both on wiki and the continued harassment on IRC after a warning. Dusti*Let's talk!* 07:58, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you Dusti, but I still feel that there is a need for this interaction ban. As far as I know I have done nothing to provoke his/her personal attacks against me. Also for consideration I submit my contributions to the WikiIndex site as this was raised in Zhuyifei1999's comment in the CP discussion. Note that my profile page there was created at 10:47 on 22-Aug-2013 (NZT), which was before the first offensive post from Zhuyifei1999 was made here at 11:39 (NZT) on the Meta.Orain Community Portal. I had seen his/her edit appear in the RC here at Orain, and followed the link to WikiIndex. Impressed by what I saw there, I registered an account and proceeded to create my common user profile components in preparation to start contributing there. When I saw the commotion that was going on back here at Orain between myself and Zhuyifei1999, I swiftly blanked my pages at WikiIndex and removed the account entry from my KeePass, so I can no longer log in on that site under that username.
BTW, I should have mentioned that the IRC log posted above was from #orain on Freenode. AugurNZ 08:53, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Proposal - AugurNZ and Zhuyifei1999 are hereby instructed to cease communication via this interaction ban. This ban encompasses both Orain and all projects hosted by Orain, as well as any room associated with Orain on IRC. Should either user initiate contact with the other violating this Interaction Ban - the user may be blocked initially for up to 1 month, then with new violation a block increasing in duration to a maximum of 1 year. Dusti*Let's talk!* 16:19, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

We really shouldn't be needing to do these but I guess it seems fine for enforcement. John (talk) 17:49, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
I agree with John. This shouldn't have to happen, but since it did, I support the IBAN, albeit I like both editors, so this is beyond unfortunate. Sorry. Coach Wikipedia ( TCGE) 18:46, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Seeing as there's no real reason to decline this - I'm Approving this - effective the end of Zhuyifei's block. Dusti*Let's talk!* 19:51, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. AugurNZ 20:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Global Importer

Due to my recent change limiting importupload, I have created a global importer group for users who have experience with importing and are skilled with doing related duties such as history merges. The rights have been added as they are per recommendation of Eikes. For information, Eikes (not his Wikimedia username) has experience on Wikimedia wikis with import rights and related responsibilities such as histmerges. This is why I therefore listened to his advice on rights and assigned him the rights to begin with. If a fellow steward disagrees with a right in the group, please communicate with me first before removing it unless it is apparent that it is or can be very easily abused. Also note, my focus for the group is users in or limited to those who need to use it globally or have great experience with it. In addition, I wish for the group to remain fully globally though wikis may opt out of it as needed. Thanks, John (talk) 22:36, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Ombudsman Group Creation

I just wanted to let everyone know that I've gone ahead and created the ombudsman group with the following permissions:

  • abusefilter-log-private
  • checkuser-log
  • suppressionlog

Those were just some basic permissions that they should have (in my opinion), if you feel there should be others, feel free to add them and post here. I might consider removing abusefilter-log-private after more discussion. This group is active on all wikis. -- Joe G. (Talk) 18:20, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Joe, thanks for creating the group. I also added browsearchive, deletedhistory, deletedtext and suppressrevision for read-only purposes, so that the Ombudsman can review what was actually deleted/suppressed. Kudu (talk) 19:57, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good, I wasn't sure if that was necessary for them to view page text and such. -- Joe G. (Talk) 21:00, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

I have two accounts on the Orain wiki farm

I have GethN7 (the account I used to set up All The Tropes), and the other account is Arcane. I use the name GethN7 on Wikia and on ATT. Arcane is my name on most other wikis (Arcane21 on Wikimedia projects).

I have the accounts for different reasons since I'm known by different names on different wikis. "Arcane" is my local admin account here on Orain Meta and is strictly for Orain Meta related purposes. GethN7 is strictly for running the All The Tropes wiki, a name I chose since it's what I am known as on Wikia.

I have tried not to use either account for illicit purposes and while I did not intend deliberate deception, I did not want to reveal my alternate accounts since I use them for different purposes. However, since I accidentally outed myself on the Orain IRC channel, I have decided, in the interests of transparency, to make clear my two accounts and my intentions for both.

If I have caused any confusion or I should have admitted this information earlier, I apologize for any confusion or problems this may have caused.

Regardless, I am proud to be member of Orain, and I promise neither of these accounts will be used in a manner detrimental to this service. GethN7 (talk) 20:40, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification, I would like to take this opportunity to note that an email has also been sent to the steward team regarding this topic and confirming that these two users are really the same. Thank you, -- Joe G. (Talk) 20:43, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi GethN7, could you please confirm this by editing under your Arcane account? Kudu (talk) 15:06, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
I left an edit on my Arcane account as GethN7 confirming it is an alternate account, with an edit reasons stating I did so by your request. GethN7 (talk) 19:29, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
OK. Please note that alternate accounts should normally be identified on both user pages, or, at the very least, known to the stewards. Kudu (talk) 17:36, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Dormant Wikis

Hi guys,

Today, I am going through and tagging wikis per the Dormant wikis policy for locking sometime in the future. Stewards should check this list periodically to see if the wikis listed have passed the acceptable lock date and take action if they are still inactive.

Wikis to be locked on 24 November 2013 (inactive since/before 25 October 2013):

Thank you, -- Joe G. (Talk) 20:38, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Elder lords and Micronations

Hold on a minute. I returned and edited on my elder lords wiki and my micronations wiki so don't close em please.-Tyreek (talk) 13:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Tyreek, at the time that we checked, your wikis were inactive. I am marking them as active again and they will not be closed. In the future, if your wikis are marked as being subject to being closed, please do not remove the banner yourself; this is only because it is a way you can get confirmation that a steward has acknowledged activity on the wiki again. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask. -- Joe G. (Talk) 19:22, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

SAC wiki

For the record, SACwiki (sac.orain.org) has been experiencing a glitch with logging in for over a month by now that effectively prevented its members from contributing. I notified global steward John of the problem back then, but it's still unresolved, hence the absence of activity, which has now led to the inactivity charge. Moreover, contrary to the statement above, I have not been notified of the dormancy issues, otherwise I would have brought this issue up here long ago. It was only by chance that I stumbled upon this notice today. Could you please remove SACwiki from the shutdown list and help fix the login issue. Much obliged. Regards, SAC SEC (talk) 08:33, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Reopened and we will check into that login issue right away, my apologies for the mistake. -- Joe G. (Talk) 14:08, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Done We have resolved the login issue on your wiki. -- Joe G. (Talk) 17:22, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Thank you so much, Joe G. Regards, SAC SEC (talk) 21:46, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Policy update

The policy has been updated to require that wikis be deleted after 3 months of inactivity. There will be an additional concurrent grace period of 14 days, meaning that no wiki will be deleted earlier than March 30, 2014. However, wikis whose 3 months of inactivity fall after that date will not get an additional time extension. Kudu ~I/O~ 20:49, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Sturmkrieg

It's active again. Please remove the notice. Sturmkrieger (talk) 03:26, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

AlleniaWiki Inactivity Notice Removal

This wiki has been semi-inactive due to a temporary hiatus of the project. However, the wiki will become more active as more players come onto the server, and as more features are added. I would like the banner to please be removed. Thank you.

Hi there, could you please make an edit to the wiki? Then, per the dormancy policy, the wiki will become active again and the banner will be removed. Thank you! (The edit is strictly procedure to make a record of when the last edit was made so we don't accidentally mark it again!) -- Joe G. (Talk) 00:13, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Cricket Wiki

In Cricket Wiki transwiki import is available. But I'm requesting here to enable the file upload import at Cricket Wiki. Cause there's many thing that cannot be imported only by transwiki import. In these cases file upload import is very very much useful. There's no active community there. I'm the only one active there and currently managing that wiki. So I'll not be able to give any consensus. --Pratyya (Hello!) 11:41, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

For which reason do you need import upload where simple copy and paste can not be achieved? Similar to your previous use for importing Wikimedia specific gadgets? John (talk) 11:43, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
Actually I'm gonna import some Module Space pages and some complicated templates from English Wiki (en.wikipedia.org). That's why I'm requesting to enable file upload import. Also that's a cricket wiki. It'll contain article about only cricket. So I'll need to import a little. But copy and pasting takes a lot of time while import is automated and you don't need much time. @John --Pratyya (Hello!) 11:53, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
Done temporarily. John (talk) 12:12, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

GS wiki

We currently have a GS nomination on SRGP, and I want to know these things: (Although I don't have any private wikis,) do GS' have access to private wkkis? And, what's the rule for GS opt-out wikis? Thanks, —레비ReviDCM 13:50, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

GS have Sysop access on private wikis, how the lack of the 'read' right means it is impossible for a GS to make use of the rights. Stewards on the other do have read access only for steward work. GS opt-out is done based on a request from the wiki owner. Similar to opt out for bots. John (talk) 14:46, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Admin request

Could I please be promoted to sysop so that I can work on organization and editing this wiki to serve as a community wiki? I did similar work at Wikkii before they were abandon by the sysadmins. Also, Arcane is a sysop here and we've worked together on plenty of projects before. Inquisitor Sasha (talk) 16:58, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Please follow the local process John (talk) 17:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Blocked on dragonballwiki

I wonder why I am blocked on dragonballwiki? I didn't made any edits or log actions (only account creation), but Esmost blocks me anyway. Obviously, I am not able to ask Esmost why and I request an unblock, as it seems there is no appropriate reason to block me. Southparkfan (talk) 18:17, 30 August 2014 (BST)

Unblocked and asked them since you are a trusted user globally. John (talk) 18:19, 30 August 2014 (BST)

Error on Page

I stumbled on this page when searching for something and found an error.
==> allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Alien_Sky
I am not a user and do not want to become one, but I found an error on one of your pages and maybe you want to fix it. As a scientist I hope you will since you are saying 'Bad Science'.

It says,
"The Sliders episode "State Of The A.R.T." changed the color of the sky to lilac. The Ridiculously Human Robot gives it a Hand Wave about pollution particles-- not one that makes scientific sense, of course, but at least it was acknowledged."

The robot does not say "pollution particles", he says "particles and gasses" and what he says Does make scientific sense. He is explaining in a very simple fashion, 'Raleigh Scattering' which is the correct explanation and main reason as to why our sky is blue.

Our sky is 99% nitrogen and oxygen which are almost the same size molecules and cause scattering of blue light. (There are also secondary reasons from the emission spectra of oxygen and nitrogen, our ionosphere, how thick our atmosphere is, and the way the cones in our eyes work.)
It is perfectly reasonable to have an atmosphere of smaller particles(maybe helium and oxygen) that would have Raleigh scattering of violet light. --71.174.126.2 21:52, 31 August 2014 (BST)

Hello there, on my wiki nationale.orain.org, whenever I click recent changes the page says "This is a cached copy of the requested page, and may not be up to date. Sorry! This site is experiencing technical difficulties.

Try waiting a few minutes and reloading.

(Cannot contact the database server: No such file or directory)

You can try searching via Google in the meantime. Note that their indexes of our content may be out of date."

I would love for this problem to be fixed please.--Tyreek (talk) 14:28, 21 September 2014 (BST)

Hello Tyreek! We are undergoing some cache & HHVM problems, the sysadmins will look at this soon. Southparkfan (talk) 14:29, 21 September 2014 (BST)
Okay, thanks.--Tyreek (talk) 22:20, 21 September 2014 (BST)
The issue is genuinely unknown here. The error message is less than helpful, no error logs or any logs at all are being generated about it however enabling HHVM fixes the issue which is currently a beta feature on all wikis and will likely be one our default runtime on Saturday. John (talk) 22:36, 21 September 2014 (BST)

Import from XML dump please?

The wiki I proposed was recently approved at class.orain.org and the person who approved it said I could request that someone here perform the import from my backup file. New Global Sysop Right

Global sysops now have the ability to make and remove global blocks on IP addresses. This feature was enabled in an effort to combat the growing amount of spam that is being received on a daily basis. Questions and concerns may be made below. Dusti*Let's talk!* 21:25, 29 September 2014 (BST)

The problem is that the IP-addresses used for spam are entirely different, I've made some rangeblocks on Meta (local), but it doesn't seems to help. Any ideas? Southparkfan (talk) 21:34, 29 September 2014 (BST)
Unless I'm mistaken, you can rangeblock globally as well - which should have an impact. Dusti*Let's talk!* 21:46, 29 September 2014 (BST)
Though really should be avoided unless necessary. John (talk) 22:07, 29 September 2014 (BST)
Visiting Special:GlobalBlock only triggers permission errors here. Southparkfan (talk) 21:55, 30 September 2014 (BST)
The userright is enabled - I just double checked. Try logging out and clearing your cache. I'm able to go there no problem. Dusti*Let's talk!* 22:06, 30 September 2014 (BST)
I do not have cache on globalblock, and I see permission error too. — ReviComplaint? 15:47, 27 October 2014 (GMT)
I've just removed the right for two reasons. 1) The ability to globally block an IP should only be enabled on metawiki. 2) GS is not enabled on metawiki. John (talk) 16:57, 27 October 2014 (GMT)

Spam bot's on Test Wiki

Hello stewards, recently there has been a big number of spam bot's on the the test wiki. Is there something you can do about it? --Reception123 (talk) 07:50, 23 November 2014 (GMT)

There have been a lot everywhere recently. What we need are better spam filters globally but I am not in the best if states to be doing this stuff for now. Global Sysops have the ability to create global filters. John (talk) 08:14, 23 November 2014 (GMT)
Yes, the filter's need to be configured better, on the TestWiki they are mixed up with the test filters but also the global filters do not work to well. I hope this is fixed. --Reception123 (talk) 11:21, 23 November 2014 (GMT)
I also added a few filters from the Simple Wikipedia to the TestWiki. I hope this is fine. --Reception123 (talk) 12:18, 23 November 2014 (GMT)

Changing global filter 2

As following my idea about the Spam bot's on the TestWiki I request that the filter 2 on the global wikis would be changed and when it is triggered to block the users, as it is tiring for users to manually block but easier from them to unblock rare mistakes that could happen. Is it possible to change this filter? --Reception123 (talk) 17:02, 23 November 2014 (GMT). I do not request this anymore as a filter I have created on the local wiki works fine.

The filter is already set to block and has been since its creation around August. John (talk) 15:39, 24 November 2014 (GMT)

Language of Busmania

Hi, just wonder why is my Busmania wiki (bus.orain.org)'s default language is changed from Chinese to English? The interface is changed, the Mainpage is replaced by english mainpage(Main Page) instead of chinese title (主页), but the zh-cn/zh-hk/zh-sg option is kept.

Also when viewed from internet explorer the logo is replaced by Wikipedia logo but for firefox still orain wiki logo.

Could you please repair it and let me know why it happens? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ww9980 (talkcontribs) 12:24, 29 November 2014‎

Import a group of articles via xml file

Hi all. I want to import a group of articles, etc. of mine from Wikia via xml file into cannabis.orain.org, and I don't see a way with Special:Import here:

I noticed another thread here about importing via xml file. Here is the xml file:

I also need to import some images for those articles. Can I have multiple file upload activated on my wiki at cannabis.orain.org?

--Timeshifter (talk) 15:32, 21 December 2014 (GMT)

Not allowing download. John (talk) 17:28, 22 December 2014 (GMT)
Here is a better, more direct link:
http://www.filedropper.com/weedwiki-20141221152354
Go to that page, and then click the download link. It works. I just tested it, and downloaded the xml file. It has a CAPTCHA before allowing the download.
I would prefer to have direct import ability myself for awhile if possible. I have done it on another wiki, and understand how to do it. I have a lot of interdependent files, articles, and templates. I think I got most of them in the xml file already, but I probably missed a lot of them, or will find more I want later. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:59, 23 December 2014 (GMT)
Hello, Timeshifter, I used my global sysop powers to temporarily grant myself importer rights to fulfill your request, and have removed that flag upon verifying all the pages in that XML were uploaded properly. Please let us know if you need further dumps imported, and have a happy holidays! :) Arcane (talk) 03:34, 24 December 2014 (GMT)

Donation Drive Notice

Just leaving a notice that I received 3 of the exact same message postings from the "mass messaging system" on my profile at the same time. Kinda of an annoying way to blow up my profile messages.

Anthonyk747 (talk) 15:46, 5 January 2015 (GMT)

Hi Anthony - I'm really sorry about that. I went through and removed all of the duplicates. It was my first time using the extension and none of the messages seemed to go out. I then noticed a typo in the Indiegogo link and had to fix that. Again, my apologies for the newbie mistake :) Dusti*Let's talk!* 15:49, 5 January 2015 (GMT)

Organizational Structure Change

It's with great sadness that I announce that John Lewis has decided to part ways with Orain. At this time, Tanner, Zachary_DuBois, and Tim will be joining our SysAdmin team. Each of them are identified according to our Privacy Policy, however, they will not have access to the Steward permissions unless they go through a community granted permissions process. Dusti*Let's talk!* 03:29, 20 January 2015 (GMT)

A message from one of the founders

The last couple of days have been, well, insane. Personally, I've had some issues to take care of and haven't been around as much as needed. Professionally, Orain has gone through a vast amount of changes that have gone unannounced. This is due, in part, because of my negligence, and I apologize for that. At no time have I intended to keep the community "in the dark" over what's been going on.

The first order of business is a staffing change. John Lewis is no longer with Orain. This is due for several reasons and I'm not going to dive into those in an attempt to keep this community drama free and out of respect for John. He and I spoke and it was determined the best course of action was for Orain and he to part ways. I cannot thank him enough for his hard work, dedication, and the commitment that he's shown this project.

With that being said, the obvious issue at hand, and the reason that we've had an Indiegogo campaign, is because we have technical resource needs. We've outgrown our current home and things were happening that aren't fair to the end user - you. While John was looking towards us purchasing our own servers to help with long term stability, several neutral parties expressed their concerns over the cons of that thought. When looking at the long term pro's and con's of the idea, the con's, while few, outweigh the benefits.

I approached several individuals that I have worked with in the past at other wiki farms and they were enthusiastic about helping Orain. They quickly came to our think tank and had excellent ideas. They have the passion, enthusiasm, and skills that Orain needs to continue strong as we prepare for some changes to our community. After the departure of John, I did not hesitate trusting these individuals. These individuals had no problem identifying to our community as per our identification procedures and have been given root access. They do not, however, have steward rights. Those rights are community trust positions and granted by the community. Each of them have agreed to abide by the Privacy policy set in place to protect our users and the community as a whole. I am confident that with these individuals, plus our two standing sysadmins Geth and Southparkfan, in addition to the co-founder of this project Kudu we will not only continue to better our project and our community, but we'll be able to quickly implement and respond to Feature requests and wiki requests in a timely manner.

I've asked one of the users, Tanner (git on IRC) to prepare a statement that I'll now share with you. I want to reiterate and assure you that Orain is going to remain heading in the direction that it was already heading. The only major change that we're currently looking at is our servers, which was the purpose of the Indiegogo campaign. Here is git's statement:

Hi, I'm Tanner. As I'm sure you know, Orain has been having some technical problems. Dusti reached out to me a few days ago asking if I could help solve these problems. I investigated them a bit, and saw a few problems. First, the current infrastructure is not suited for our number of users. I plan on fixing this by shifting some things around on the servers, and adding/removing servers as necessary. In addition, I would like to move some of our services off of Orain-owned servers, onto "as a service"s. These might include Route 53 (a DNS service provided by Amazon), SES (an outgoing email service provided by Amazon), and Mailstache, Zoho, or Google Apps (all services to recieve emails). I would also like to move from using Nagios to monitor our servers to a service such as New Relic and Pingdom. By doing this, we will ensure that, should an entire datacenter go down, we will be notified no matter what. In addition, we, as a team of system administrators, are considering moving our servers from DigitalOcean to Amazon Web Services, also known as AWS. AWS is used by some of the largest websites on the internet, including Netflix, Reddit, NASA. By using AWS, we would more easily be able to scale our services as needed, and reduce downtime.

Some users have expressed a concern about our funds and a staff change while undergoing a donation drive. I want to reiterate that I am the only individual that has access to Orain's funds. No other user has access to our funds. These funds are held in our PayPal account and a savings account held by the Bank of Nova Scotia. The funds are linked (i.e. PayPal is linked to the Savings account) so funds can be transferred back and forth and not held in a single location for security reasons. A minimal amount (i.e. two months of bills) are held in the PayPal account at a time. This is due to PayPal's ability to freeze funds without cause and for security reasons. Kudu and I are in the process of submitting paperwork to the Government of Canada to obtain a non-profit classification for Orain which will enable us to have a completely separate bank account to hold our funds in.

Finally, over the coming days and weeks, proposals will be made to the community regarding policy updates. These are usually done yearly by organizations such as Facebook, PayPal, etc. and are meant to increase the level of security and privacy the members of the community have and should expect. These policies will only be strengthened, not weakened.

I am excited over these changes and feel that Orain is going to continue to head in a positive fashion and that the changes we are beginning to experience will better our services, strengthen our community, and help us move forward united as one.

Warm regards,
Dustin Muniz

Illegal attack by User:John

On 26 January 2015, at 03:01 AM, an email was received by Dusti indicating that the domain name `orain.org` had been sold via the NameCheap Marketplace at the price of $5. NameCheap is the current registrar for Orain.

Believing that this was either a phishing email or a joke, he then immediately accessed the NameCheap account directly and discovered the `orain.org` domain was missing from the account. He then contacted NameCheap via chat and via a support ticket informing them of the issue. The first ticket was filed at 03:09AM and the chat session was initiated at 03:12AM.

During the chat session the agent immediately locked our account, the account of the buyer, and also froze the domain so DNS records could not be changed. This was done at Dusti's request to prevent any type of security threat or disruption to the farm. There was nothing further that the chat agent could do other than to advise me to wait for the registrar's Risk Management division to reply to the ticket. One hour and seven minutes later, Risk Management began working on the support ticket gathering information from him about the incident. The domain was returned to our control at 08:08AM.

Support was then contacted to determine the series of events that led to the domain being listed for sale. The account was accessed at 5:00:26 PM from a certain IP address. The domain was listed for sale on 1/23/2015 at 5:59:40 PM EST. IP information on hand for John, obtained by our staff via CheckUser once he was suspected of being behind the attack, indicates that the last IP address from which John last accessed our own website was that same one, on both 19 January 2015 and 20 January 2015.

For those who may be unaware, John Lewis is a former volunteer with Orain who was part of our tech division for about a year and a half, until he resigned last week. It is our belief that the domain was most likely not transferred to his own account, but simply purchased on the free market, although this is speculative. It is possible that John, in a rather cowardly way, wouldn't have wanted the domain to remain associated with his account.

I would like to highlight Dusti's formidable agility in the handling of this case and the protection of the farm. At no time, other than the brief few minutes from the domain transfer until locking, was the community at risk. This entire incident was unacceptable and both NameCheap and the Staff are reviewing the incident to determine the cause and also to determine what steps can be taken to ensure that this does not happen again.

However, it is important not to misinterpret this incident as a minor internal feud between staffers or ex-staffers, or as a simple matter of operational security. As far as the staff is aware, John Lewis clearly committed a criminal act by accessing the account of an organization from which he voluntarily resigned, when he clearly did not have the right to do so, and then proceeded to successfully have the domain sold and our website's service disrupted, even though this domain was not his legal property.

As such, an official police report has been filed with the National Fraud & Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in the United Kingdom, and a case reference number (CRN) has been obtained. The report will be forwarded to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, which is run by the City of London Police. We are sorry to see that our long and fruitful business relationship with John, which until now appeared to have ceased without any drama, must have turned this way, but we have no choice but to take such issues seriously.

Dusti and I have decided to take the staff action of locking John's global account. Please note that this can be considered a preemptive block. We will privately contact John to ask him to either accept or reject our finding of events. If there is no objection to the facts that have been found, the preemptive block will be replaced with a global ban. Given that the case is in the hands of the police, we have instructed our staff members not to make any further comment on the matter, given that our only communications will be on this noticeboard for the entire community to have a clear view of the facts.

For the staff,
Kudu ~I/O~ 23:57, 26 January 2015 (GMT)

Abuse Filter

I set up several abuse filters in right.orain.org. They work fine, however, in case of user error the behaviour is somewhat user unfriendly. The rules for error case are simply not accepted.

For example, filter 14 is for new pages without category. What happens is, that the page will not get created, even though I just clicked "Warn" and "flag" when created the filter. Even, when I click just flag, the same happens: the incident is logged, no page will be created, user action blocked, but no explanation at all.

I compared the behaviour with en.wikipedia.org behaviour. There, if a filter says flag only, the event will only be flagged, but the action can be done. If the filter says warn and flag, the user will be warned, but can do the action. The rules for error case are here accepted.

Is there a possibility to make sure, that the rules for error case are accepted? With other words, they behave as in en.wikipedia.org? Fiala1 (talk) 23:05, 28 January 2015 (GMT)

We're currently taking a look into this and will let you know once we've figured out what the issue is. Dusti*Let's talk!* 15:14, 29 January 2015 (GMT)
Feel free to use right.orain.org. Just create a new page with one line and without category, and you will see the effect. You can repeat the same thing in en.wikipedia.org, and then theck the edit log - you will see, it makes an entry, but it lets create the page. The filter itself is [1]. Structural changes

To our Community:

Effective immediately, Orain will undergo structural changes in regards to advanced user permissions and hierarchy layout. This is meant to be clarificational only, and is intended to reduce the workload of users already holding advanced permissions.

The management structure of Orain is the following:

  • Project leaders
The project leaders are responsible for the management of the general operation of the project. This includes the coordination of day-to-day tasks such as wiki recruitment, public relations, marketing, system administration, software development, etc. They are also responsible for Orain Inc., the corporate branch of the project, including legal matters, finances, partnerships, hiring, etc.
At this time, the project leaders will remain the founders of this project, Users Dusti and Kudu. Please note that these individuals will not have a separate userright and will retain Steward flags.
  • Stewards
The stewards are responsible for the management of the wiki farm branch of the project. This includes the tasks of creating wikis, assigning user rights, and dealing with functions that require access to non-public information, such as CheckUser and oversight. They also organize the delegation of those functions to certain trusted users (e.g. wiki creators, local oversighters).
At this time, the only steward who has been confirmed and voted for by the community is Dusti.
  • System administrators
The system administrators (sysadmins) are responsible for the management of the technical branch of the project. This includes the tasks of software development, system administration, server allocation, etc.
At this time, System administrators have been appointed by the Stewards based on experience, trust, and their compliance with Orain's identification policy. The current system administrators are Southparkfan, GethN7/Arcane, Tanner, Kudu, Tim, Addshore, FastLizard4 and Zachary. These individuals are under the leadership of Tanner and Addshore, and each individual has access and responsibilities to various parts of the project.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who hold advanced permissions on this project. To date, we have relied heavily on community trust and support when handling advanced permissions and gauging trust. Although we have until now relied on community confirmations when choosing stewards, for the time being at least, we will be allowing stewards to be appointed by Orain staff in addition to the standard community processes. We believe this temporary measure will allow us to establish a strong base of experienced, trusted users to help us grow Orain through its infant stages when help from 'old wiki hands' is needed most. As always, the community is requested to show their support and concerns on any individual who they are not comfortable with.

I do not want the community to take this as a reduction of power that the community holds. I am proud of the voice and weight that our community holds and want to reiterate that this is only to help streamline the process for maintaining this project. The community still has an extremely powerful and effective voice and we will continue to rely on it.

If you have any questions, you're more than welcome to message me, email me, or email the current staff as a whole via staff(at)orain.org.

For the staff,

Slowliness, gateway timeouts

Is orain therefore so slow, because everything is coded/decoded all the time (https://)? Is there a way to make some wikis "unsecure", but faster (using http://)? Fiala1 (talk) 12:24, 11 March 2015 (GMT)

Hi Fiala1, https shouldn't make things much slower than normal, but I guess I might know why the wiki's are slow. At each hour (00:00, 01:00, 02:00, etc), our (three) MediaWiki servers start running cronjobs (one to remove old CheckUser data, one to remove old AbuseFilter data, one to run jobs, etc). While these cronjobs are very useful, they put much stress on the servers, and thus the wiki's experience slowness. The cronjobs should mostly finish in 5-10 minutes. But - are you able to give URLs and timestamps of moments when your wiki is slow? Southparkfan (talk) 15:53, 14 March 2015 (GMT)

I believe the issue lies with the fact that the wiki is listed in the Database list as 'ceidwiki' while the wiki was created using database 'ceidwikiwiki'. I think someone needs to change the Database list to either be 'ceidwikiwiki' or rename the actual database to 'ceidwiki'. Here is the log entry for reference: 09:58 . . Many many redirects and an issue on this page

Hello! In an attempt to help Orain in any ways possible, I just fixed 2 double redirects, but I thought that someone might want to look at the entire meta layout instead of me doing this, as I'm not sure what's desired. Several noticeboards were apparently moved around and now SRP redirected to Steward requests/Permissions, so I fixed the double redirect, but now at the top of this page, If you want to request permissions, please visit the [[Steward requests]] page. links to a page that redirects back to this page. Global/local account on private wikis

While editing my preferences on BGO Wiki I began looking into my global account info I then noticed that I had an account on Awesomeness wiki but it's set to private so I can't even view my own page.
